bullet  General Notes:

Jacob Duppstadt (1796-1851) born in Wettsassen, In Groshertzog, von Helpen, Bei Rhein, Germany. They had five children born in Germany, ages 14, 12, 9, 6 and 3; Anna Elizabeth, Henry, Catherina (Grady), George, Caroline (Rhoads), Margaret (Stotler). One born in America.

They emigrated from Darmstadt via Bremen, Germany in 1831, sailed August 31st [conflicts with official documents--sailed September 8], and landed at the port of Baltimore, Maryland on November 15, 1831 [official documents show landing November 18, 1831]. They were 77 days at sea, then traveled to Somerset County [PA] by wagon and first settled on the Stull homestead, just a short distance from the Duppstadt Farm. A few years later they took up residence on this heritage farm, in a log house which has been gone for many years. This is undoubtedly the original log house which Catherina (1793-1852) maintained as a widow after Jacob's death. He became a naturalized citizen of United States in the court of German Pleas of Somerset County, Pa. March 16, 1840. Jacob and Catherina Duppstadt are buried in the old Shanksville cemetery.

1 Feb 1796: Born as only son of Johann(es) and Catherina at Wettsassen, In Groshertzog von Helpen Bei Rhein, Germany.

28 Jun 1831: Jacob, profession bricklayer, age 35, wife, Catherina, age 38 and 5 children were authorized (by authorities in Geissen) to emigrate from Wettsassen, Germany.

2 Aug 1831: From Wettsassen to Ziegenhain, Germany
3 Aug 1831: To Munden, Germany
5 Aug 1831: To Bremen, Germany
18 Aug 1831: Paid $193 passage to Baltimore for 3 persons over 12 years, 3 persons over 6 years, 1 person over 1 year. [$193 in 1831 dollars becomes $2,757 in 1998 dollars.

28 Aug 1831: Scheduled to depart Bremen.

8 Sep 1831: Departed on Ship Grugin (sp) to Baltimore, MD

18 Nov 1831: Landed at Baltimore, MD after 77 days at sea. Then by wagon train to Somerset Co., PA and first settled on the Stull homestead, just a short distance from the Duppstadt Farm. A few years later they took up residence on this heritage farm, in a log house which has been gone for many years. This is undoubtedly the original log house which Catherina (1793-1852) maintained as a widow after Jacob's death (1833?).

16 Mar 1840: Jacob became a naturalized citizen of United States in the Court of Common Pleas of Somerset County, PA.

1850: Jacob built the barn in the year 1850, the Summerhouse, near Heritage House, in about the same period.

6 Jan 1852: Will probate documents show George Dopstadt to be executor of Jacob's will on May 30,1851 and executor of Catherina's will.

1870: The main house which now stands was built in 1870. A great portion of this homestead is known as the Lambert tract of land along Callendar Creek, to be exact, 104 acres and 149 perches and the house allowance. This property was an original Land (grant (or indenture)) issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to Samuel Lambert and dated the 6th day of January AD 1794. Other deeds adding parcels of land to this farm are many, one of which was issued to Joseph Kirkbride in the year 1794 AD on the third day of September and signed by John Penn, Esq.
