John served as an elder in the Baptist Church. He joined the Ramah Baptist Church soon after moving to Barbour County, Alabama, from North Carolina. He had previously been a member of a Presbyterian Church. His obituary says that he was never ordained as a minister but preached in many churches in the area where he lived. It seems likely that he preached in a number of churches during the Civil War when most of the younger men were in the Confederate Army. 2062
