Oct. 1, 1862 promoted to 1st Sergeant in the 23 Battalion AL Sharpshooters, CSA.

He was wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga and sent to Chickamauga Station and Hospital, Marietta, GA.

Evidence of physician: Thomas C. Watson, MD, Faulkner Co., AR: states "J. W. Blakey was struck by a spent ball in the articulation of the internal cuneiform bone and metatarsal bone of the great toe of the right foot.
