William B. Truitt 1850
General Notes:
Bridgeville's (Delaware) great claim to fame in the early 1900s is involved with the world of agriculture. A tremendous acerage of fruit trees and dealings with such truck crops as strawberries, cantaloupes, and watermelons had brought the town national recognition as a produce-growing center. In season, the streets near the railroad tracks were lined with farm vehicles bringing produce for sale to a group of brokers who would purchase the produce and reship it to metropolitan markets. By 1914 Bridgeville had become known as the June strawberry capitol of the nation. William B. Truitt, and others, were active in the produce business and frequently loaded as many as 100 refrigerated railroad cars daily at the peak of the season.
