Joseph was a farmer, sawmill operator and owner and a Civil War soldier fighting in the Union Army. He was injured while fighting for the Confederacy when he had two fingers shot off of his right hand while firing his own gun at the advancing Union Line at the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas.

His first wife died while he was away at the Civil war.

He had a paralized throat, was fed by a tube to his stomach. Got tired of feeding tube so he removed it and starved to death. ^548,550

Youngs Battalion, Marmadukes Brigade. He then enrolled in the Union Army at Bucklin, Missouri on the 6th day of August 1864 as a private in Company I of the 42nd Regiment of Missouri Infantry commanded by First Lieutenant Edward Cox. He was honorably discharged at Nashville, Tennessee on the 22nd day of March 1865. His personal description at enlistment was as follows: Height 5ft. 10in. / Complexion, Fair / Eyes, Blue / Hair Color, Light / Occupation, Farmer / Born, Washington Co. Illinois 1839.

Honorably Discharged at Nashville, Davidson, Tennesse, USA on the 22nd day of March 1865.
