HOOKER FAMILY SETTLED IN LINN CO. CENTURY AGO

G. H. Hooker of near Lineville brought a load of sheep to Princeton Friday which were sold in the community sale. Mr. Hooker made this office a visit. In the discussion of today’s problems the hardships and trials of our pioneers were recalled. The Hooker family have played an interesting part in the early history of Missouri.

Mr. Hooker’s grandfather, Jerry Hooker, was one of the first eight families to settle in Linn County a century ago. John B. Hooker, father of G. H. Hooker, was either the first of second white child born there. In 1892 he moved to a farm near Lineville where he lived about 15 years then he moved to Lineville where he helped to incorporate south Lineville and was elected as its first mayor in which capacity he served several years, also as justice of the peace.

Following are some interesting facts of the Hooker family taken from the Linn County News, published in September 1933 (see Jeremiah Hooker’s miscelleaneous notes).

G. H. Hooker had one of the broad axes his grandfather used in building a home in Missouri over a century ago (1933).

NOTE: The last person to own the above mentioned broadax was Madelene McElfish of Lineville, Iowa. She was the GG granddaughter of Jeremiah Hooker.

George Hatcher moved to Lineville, Iowa-Missouri in 1892.
