bullet  General Notes:

George Truitt was a signer of the Resolution declaring Delaware the First State in the Union; it shows him as having been from Kent County, Delaware.

In 1788, 1790, 1791, and 1793 George Truitt was a member of the State House of Representatives in Delaware from Kent County.

On December 11, 1788 is the first mention of Camden, Delaware, with regard to George Truitt and his wife and it appears in a deed for a lotin the village sometime heretofore called Miflins Crossroads (alias Picadilly) but now called and known by the name Camden. Although the last to be organized, the "Camden Friends Meeting" absorbed all the other Friends meetings in Kent County.

In 1806 George Truitt was a State Senator from Kent County, Delaware.

1807: Three of Delaware's Governors have been chosen from South Murderkill Hundred. George Truitt, elected governor in 1807, was a leading farmer of that Hundred and lived between Felton and Canterbury. He had the fullest respect for the people and occupied many prominent public positions.

In 1808 George Truitt was elected by the people the seventeenth Governor of Delaware and served from January 1808 to January 1811. He was a large land owner and occupied a stately residence on the state road between Felton and Canterbury. He was a member of the State Convention that ratified the Constitution of the United States and the fact that he was a leading an influential citizen in the community where he lived is shown by his election on four different occasions to the State House of Representatives and one as a member of the State Senate. His only daughter married Dr. James Fisher of Camden, but died early, and there are no descendants of Governor Truitt now living.

Governor George Truitt died on October 8, 1818 in the 62nd year of his age and was buried on his own farm where his remains together with those of his wife and daughter rested until the spring of 1903, when by resolution of the General Assembly of the State of Delaware an appropriation was made whereby the remains of the Governor and his family were reintered in the Barrett Chapel Cemetery.
