OBITUARY - Service for Mrs. Alice Bennett on Saturday

Mary Alice Bennett, oldest child of a family of fifteen children, was the daughter of Enoch and Ida Gable Hooker, and was born October 7, 1875. She passed away May 11, 1961 and while she had not been well for several months, her death was unexpected.

She was born on a farm near where she had spent her entire life.

After completing her elementary education in her home community she attended and was graduated from the Humphreys College, and also attended the College at Chillicothe, following this she taught school for several years.

She was the last charter member of the Locust Valley Baptist church.

December 24, 1899, she was united in marriage to John Thomas Bennett in a ceremony at Locust Valley. This was the first wedding preformed(sic) at the church, and two other couples, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Stone and Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Freeland were also married the same evening.

To this union three children were born, James Arthur and Charles Noel of Browning and a daughter dying in infancy. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren, six sisters and a number of nieces and nephew.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1957. Her parents and eight brothers and sisters. She had lived a long, useful dedicated life and her family and friends will greatly miss her.

Through the dark and shadowed night
The master's ever loving hand
Has led our loved one tenderly
Into his bright eternal land.
And may he bring us comfort now
And free our hearts of grief and care
Leaving only treasured thoughts and memories
Of our loved one there.

Funeral services were held at one o'clock, Saturday, May 13, 1961, in the First Baptist church in Browning and were conducted by the pastor, the Rev. W. K. Calvin. The song service was by Mrs. Velma Jennings and Mrs. Beverly Moore, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. James Neet.

Casket bearers were: George Prather, Ned Mundell, Lee Kimbrough, Verl Riddle, Phillip Grice and George Taylor.

Burial was made in the Dry Ridge cemetery under the direction of the Wade Funeral Home.
