bullet  General Notes:

From an old family Bible, Mrs Mable McKinney identified thirteenchildren who belonged to William of 1730, all by name except two whowere not legible.

NOTE:Mannering I of North Carolina is placed as the child of JamesBrookshaw, Jr. because James was married to Sarah Mannering. Asurname of a wife is much more likely to be given to a offspring ofthat wife than to a nephew. William I of North Carolins, 1730, on th=other hand, is known to be the child of William of Virginia. GlennaBeck is in possession of a letter written by James that married Marth=Wright that stated that his grandfather was William Brookshaw. Thismakes William and Mannering of North Carolina cousins rather thanbrothers as previously thought.[Carl Brookshire]

1737 SOMERSET COUNTY, MARYLAND TAX LISTS
From Tax Lists of Somerset County, Maryland, 1730-1740 by ElliottRusso:
Note: the criteria for Somerset County, Maryland tax list was thatmales over 16 Iwhite and black) and every black female over 16 waslisted and taxable. There were exceptions. The implication is that =whilt male would appear on a tax list at the age of 16. If so, onemight surmise that William Brookshire was born about 1721. (ie. 1737minus 16 =3D 1721) (Normand)

From these tax lists and the Bible record of William I (see later) wecan approximate the birth dates of William and Mannering. William wa=probably a little older than Mannering as his older children seem tobe older than the older children of Mannering. Since William's firstchild was born in 1751, we may assume that he could not have been bor=much after 1730. Usually a person was exempted from paying poll taxupon attaining the afg of fifty, therefore, since William's nameappears on the 1768 tax list, he must have been born after 1718. Ifwe say that Mannering was a little younger than William, then he woul=have been born 1732 or before. As his name appears on the 1779 taxlist we may assume that he was not yet fifty years of age, thus, hewould have been born after 1729. 1729-1732 is a pretty close interva=so that we can feel reasonably sure that William was born ca. 1730 an=Mannering on 1732. (Note that this analysis is predecated upon thesupposition that the appearance of the name of Mannering upon the 177 tax list indicated that he paid poll tax that year.)
