bullet  General Notes:

Chester attended grade schools in Delaware and Blackford counties through the eighth grade, He finished the eighth grade at Ervindale School in Blackford county, attended Eaton High School for a few weeks in the 9th grade, then quit school to devote full time to helping his father farm.

Chester died on 4 September 1926 at the age of 30 years. He was bedfast at home for his last two weeks, after enduring severe back pains for the previous few weeks. Some type of kidney disease was thought to have caused his death. His illness was diagnosed as "Bright's Disease." It is very possible that he could have been cured if he had such a disease today.

William Keith Fisher I remembers his father (Chester) fairly well. "He was about five feet and ten inches tall, 'barrel-chested' with a strong upper body, and brown- haired. As I remember, he was 'even-tempered', well-liked, and respected by his friends and relatives. I have been told by several relatives that he was an extremely diligent worker and a very successful farmer. My Uncle Harold Walburn once told me that my father could "chin" himself 19 times with one arm - to me, an almost unbelievable feat of strength."

Chester was regarded as a very industrious and hard- working young man, conducting a relatively large farming operation for the period of time in which he lived. He was what is known a 'corn and hog farmer.' The principal crop was corn, which was fed to hogs to fatten them for the market. At the time of his death he was feeding 500 head of hogs. He was one of the first farmers in his area to raise soybeans, a new crop back then which was mainly used for feeding of cattle. He was also one of the first farmers in his area to sell milk directly to a dairy, instead of separating the milk and selling the resulting butter as was commonly done back then. However, he had to deliver the milk in ten gallons can to the Jones Dairy in Hartford City; there were no dairy routes then as there were later. He purchased an early Ford Pick-Up Truck, a 1926 model, to deliver the milk each morning and to serve as the family's only passenger vehicle.

Chester was a deacon in the Eaton Christian Church, Eaton, Indiana, where he and his family attended services regularly. 641
