bullet  General Notes:

She received her education in Rose Bud. In about 1910 she entered school in North Little Rock, Arkansas but she did not like it and dropped out and returned to Rose Bud. She told me that she had a new pair of shoes and they "squeaked" when she walked and her classmates made fun of her. Even though her formal education was limited to about 7 or 8 years she "home schooled" John Robert and Betty and they both graduated from high school at age 16 because of the early start they received from her. After her marriage she worked in the General Mercantile Business when she could. She was best known in the community for her cooking and sewing. During the 40's and 50's Charles raised hogs and butchered them. They were well known for their sausage and cured hams. Alta could "stuff" sausage faster than any one who ever tried to beat her. For many years she "kept" boarders--mostly teachers in the school. She was very active in community affairs such as PTA, Home Demonstration Club, and other groups, as well as working in the Bible Study and Missions areas of her beloved Baptist Church. Many Baptist preachers spent Saturday and/or Sunday Nights in their home. In many ways, she was a frail woman but despite her many medical problems, she was always interested in helping others. She had numerous strokes and heart attacks and died January 14, 1977, after suffering a stroke on December 24, 1976. She is buried in the Davis Family plot at Bethesda Cemetery. The temperature the day she was buried was -10 degrees--115 degrees less than the day Charles was buried in July 1979. She was the mother of five children. The house of her birth (purchased by her father in late 1874 prior to his marriage in 1875] was remodeled several times. A significant change was made in 1925 when the 3 East bedrooms were added. In 1946, the bathroom was added and the kitchen was completely redone to make room for the bathroom.
