OBITUARY

Humes Truitt Lasher, a retired Circuit Court judge and a pioneer in the effort to bring artificial reefs to Broward County, died at his Fort Lauderdale home on Saturday. He was 83. Judge Lasher was born in Tarantum, Pa. He moved to South Florida in the 1920s, when his father purchased the Detroit Hotel in Hollywood. Judge Lasher spent his childhood on the waters from Key West to Fort Lauderdale, building a lifelong love of the sea. He remained an avid fisherman and boater until his death. "He was able to do his exploring of what is now the Intracoastal Waterway) in a rowboat," said his son Humes T. Lasher Jr. When World War II broke out, Judge Lasher, who had a private pilot's license, was pursuing a degree at the University of Miami. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and when the United States entered the war he joined the U.S. Navy. Judge Lasher worked as a flight instructor before serving in the Pacific as a naval aviator. He returned to the University of Miami and received a law degree in 1950. Judge Lasher returned to Pennsylvania where he worked in his family's lumber company. He came back to Fort Lauderdale in 1962 to practice law. "Once he got back down here he programmed his life, his extracurricular activities, to be centered around the water," his son said. Judge Lasher was elected as a Court of Record judge in 1968 and later as a Circuit Court judge. He retired in 1978, but served as a senior judge around the state until 1990. In 1968, Judge Lasher and some friends formed Broward Artificial Reef Inc., which led to the creation of Osborne Reef, the county's first artificial reef project. The county now runs its own artificial reef program. Judge Lasher was active in a number of organizations including the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Masons and the Fort Lauderdale Shrine Club. Judge Lasher is survived by his wife of 62 years, Evelyn W. Lasher; two sons, Humes Truitt Lasher Jr., and Barry Humes Lasher; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A private service is being held followed by a burial at sea by the U.S. Navy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Shriner's Crippled Children Hospital in Tampa.
