bullet  General Notes:

Phillip and Jane moved from Logan County, Ohio, to Goshen, Indiana. He was a farmer and also ran the first hotel in Goshen. The country was new, so he had to protect his family against Indians and wild animals. He also did teaming from Ft. Wayne, Indiana, sixty miles away. About 1860 they moved to Warsaw, Indiana. They remained there until marriage of Rachel, who took them back to Elkhart to live.

He was about 6 feet tall with straight black hair which became snow white at an early age. He weighed about 180 pounds as an adult. The 1820 and 1830 federal censuses list Philip and Jane as living in OH. On deeds in IN, Philip signed his name; Jane made her mark (x). Abstract records show that Philip and Jane obtained 80 acres as land-grant in 1832, signed by President Andrew Jackson. In 1842 this 80 A was transferred to Edwin and Mary Ann Mills Mathews. 1700
