BIOGRAPHY

Lifelong member of Kaufman Mennonite Church. Co-owner of toll road from Pender Lane on Rt. 403, to the Old Tollgate Inn, in Benscreek (Somerset County). The road was never profitable; tolls ranged from 12 cents for driven cattle, 4 cents for horse and rider, 5 cents for horse & carriage, 10 cents for 2 horses and wagon. The road was eventually turned over to the township. He invested and lost heavily in Moxham Investment and Johnstown & Somerset Railroad, a streetcar line that was supposed to go from Johnstown to Somerset, but was only completed as far south as Jerome. When the line was closed the only return that Moses received resulted from selling the rails that crossed the property to M. Glosser & Sons for scrap metal, a small sum compared to his investment.

OBITUARY 1

DEATH TAKES AGED DAVIDSVILLE MAN, STRICKEN MAY 29
Moses Weaver Almost 85 Years Old; Funeral On Monday
Moses Weaver, one of Northern Somerset County's best-known residents, a farmer and stock dealer over a long period of years, died at 4:30 o'clock this morning at his home in Davidsville. He was aged 84 years and 10 months. Born August 10, 1854, on the old Weaver farmer sic, later to become the John Pender property, Mr. Weaver was a son of Daniel and Fannie (Wingard) Weaver. He was one of the stockholders of the old Davidsville Pike, a toll road also known as the Plank Road, sold to the state and now a part of Route 56(?). Mr. Weaver was twice married. His first wife was Christina Hershberger. She died more than a half century ago. TO this union were born these children: J. E. Weaver, Davidsville; Rev. Hiram Weaver, pastor of the Mennonite Church, Harrisonburg, Va., Josiah Weaver, Davidsville; David Weaver, Ferndale; S. Henry Weaver, Hastings, Mich., and Mary, wife of Edward Kaufman, residing near the summit of Tire Hill. Two daughters, Ida and Katie, the later expiring in infancy, preceded him to the grave. Mr. Weaver's second wife was the former Sarah Fender of Upper Yoder Township, Cambria County. She died some years ago, after Mr. Weaver sold his farm to the late John Pender and purchased the Cal Lehman home in Davidsville. To the second union four children were born, all now deceased. They were Irvin and Nora, who passed away in childhood; Walter, who died in the West, and Anna, wife of Howard Forney, who with her husband died several years ago. Moses Weaver had been ill only once in his long life before the attack that caused his death. He suffered from influenza a few years ago, but recovered nicely. On Monday, May 29, he suffered a stroke and his condition became such that his sons residing at a distance were summoned and arrived last night. Mr. Weaver was a member of the Mennonite Church all his life. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Kaufman Mennonite Church. Rev. Irvin Holsopple, pastor, will officiate and will be assisted by Rev. Russell T. Shilling, pastor of the Davidsville Lutheran Church. Interment in charge of H. M. Picking & Sons, South Side morticians, will be in the Weaver Family Cemetery on the present Fender farm.
