OBITUARY

E. W. BAUMGARDNER EXPIRES SUDDENLY; SUFFERED STROKE
Well-Known County Commissioner Succumbs While Hauling Load of Lumber to Home FUNERAL THURSDAY AT 2

Emanuel W. Baumgardner, aged 60 years, of Richland Township, a member of the Board of Cambria County Commissioners and one of the best-known residents of the county, died suddenly about 6 o'clock last evening while en route to his residence with a truck load of lumber, which he had purchased at the Johnstown Planing Mill in the Seventh Ward. He was driving his automobile truck along the Scalp Level Pike when he became unconscious. The truck ran into a ditch, throwing Mr. Baumgardner from the seat to the ground. Mr. Baumpardner was found by J. H. Miller and his son, John Miller, of Richland Township, who were driving along the pike in a Ford roadster en route to their home. When they reached Mr. Baumgardner's side he made an effort to speak, but was unable to talk. Mr. Miller and his son carried Mr. Baumgardner into the residence of G. H. Baker nearby, where he died a few minutes later. Dr. I. E. Sloan, of Johnstown, was summoned and pronounced Mr. Baumgardner dead. His death was due to a stroke of apoplexy. Apparently Mr. Baumgardner was not seriously injured by the fall. Mr. Baumgardner's sudden death was a great shock to his wife and family, as he was in fine spirits and apparently in good health when he left home in the early part of the afternoon to come to Johnstown for some lumber for the completion of his new residence, which the family is now occupying. While en route home Mr. Baumgardner met a number of his friends and greeted them in his usual pleasant manner. The deceased was at Ebensburg all day Monday attending to his duties at the Commissioners' office. On Monday evening he visited a physician and had a test made of his blood pressure, [4 lines illegible] and took an active part in politics. He was first elected to serve as a member of the Board of Cambria County Commissioners in 1915 and following his election he moved to Ebensburg, where he resided for about two years, then moving back to Richland Township. Second Terms as Commissioner Mr. Baumgardner was re-elected a County Commissioner at the general election last November, receiving the largest number of votes accorded any of the candidates. He was of a geneial disposition and had a large number of friends throughout Cambria County. Commissioner Baumgardner was regarded as a man of progressive ideas and a keen appreciation of the taxpayers' dollars and a determination to make improvements with caution. Born in Richland Township The deceased was born in Richland Township February 11, 1860. He was a son of Joseph and Mary Gramling Baumgardner, both deceased. Mr. Baumgardner spent most of his life on a farm situated between Elton and Salix, in Adams Township. He displayed much interest in the affairs of the community. Commissioner Baumgardner served several terms as a School Director in Adams Township. He also served as Township supervisor for one term. While in the office of supervisor he took much interest in road improvements, devoting much of his time to actual construction and repair of highways. He was one of the first boosters of good roads in the community and stirred up considerable interest among the other residents of the district. Mr. Baumgardner and Miss Amanda J. [4 lines illegible] The deceased is survived by his widow and four sons: Mahlon J. and Algie E. Baumgardner, both at home; A. Cloyd Baumgardner, of Salix, and E. Boyd Baumgardner who resides on the homestead farm, situated between Salix and Elton. Mr. Baumgardner also is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary J. Coplin, of Dale, and two brothers - Joseph Baumgardner, of Richland Township, and Jacob Baumgardner, of Windber. He also is survived by one granddaughter, Mary Baumgardner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Cloyd Baumgardner. Services in Dale Church Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon, the party leaving theBaumgardner residence at 1 o'clock and bringing the body to the Dale United Evangelical Church, Bedford street, where the services will be in charge of the Rev. Franklin E. Hetrick, Pastor of the Dale congregation, and the Rev. John T. Shaffer, pastor of the Geistown United Evangelical Church. Interment will be made in the Weaver Cemetery, situated along the Scalp Level Pike. The body has been prepared for burial by John Henderson Company. Court Appoints Successor In case of vacancies in the office of County Commissioner, the Constitution provides for the appointment of a successor by the Court of Common Pleas to fill the unexpired term.
