OBITUARY

Dairyman turned to township service His farm became Richland development
Herman O. "Dutch" Weaver of Richland, whose 165-acre dairy farm became the Blue Moon Estates development and was used for other land development in Richland Township, died July 6 at Laurel View Village. He was 86. Mr. Weaver took over the operation of the farm from his father, Stephen Weaver , aid his nephew, Warren Weaver of Richland. The Weaver farm was located across from Richland Greens on Luray Avenue . His nephew, who grew up visiting his uncle's farm, said the farmhouse where Mr. Weaver still lived was built after the Civil War and may be one of the oldest homes in the township. "He was probably one of the past pre-World War II farmers in Richland," his nephew said. The Weaver farm had about 40 dairy cows, the hay to feed them and everything associated with a working farm. "He sold milk at the house," his nephew said. In the early 1960's, Mr. Weaver gave up farming and became a township supervisor for 16 years. Mr. Weaver was integral to the advancement of Richland Township, his nephew said. He made the zoning and planning commission what it is today and continued the practice of naming streets after Indian tribes, such as Chippewa and Algonquin. Mr. Weaver also served as secretary of the state Association of Second Class Townships and was director of Cambria County Conservation District from 1950 to 1993. "He was in it from its founding," his nephew said. "They were devoted to improving methods of farming and conserving the land." After ending his stint as township supervisor, Mr. Weaver was an insurance agent for Lincoln Life for about 10 years. His nephew said Mr. Weaver was known as "Dutch,"which he got while he was in school. "His family spoke Pennsylvania Dutch as their language of choice, and the nickname stuck with him for life," his nephew said. Mr. Weaver enjoyed having a big garden and would give away the produce he didn't can. He was an active member of Scalp Level Church of the Brethren and many Masonic organizations. Mr. Weaver was diagnosed with cancer that had been under control until the last few months. "He was a good guy," said his daughter, Susan Worley, of Etters, York County. "He was willing to help people, and he would rarely lose his temper." "Above all, he was a friend to everyone," his nephew said. "I don't know anyone who had as many friends.: In addition to his nephew and daughter, Mr. Weaver is survived by his wife, the former Winifred Crissey; a sister, Zella Glessner of Richland ; one grandson and several nieces and nephews. The Harris Funeral Home, 500 Cherry Lane, Richland, was in charge of arrangements.
