OBITUARY

RICE - Walter A., 81, Solomon Street, died Sept. 29, 2003 , at UPMC Lee Regional. Born Jan. 14, 1922, in Johnstown, son of the late John and Margaret (Howlett) Rice. Preceded in death by son, Dennis W. Survived by wife, Dorothy J. (Gindlesperger), ending a marriage of 61 years, and beginning Oct. 25, 1941; daughter, Pamela D., wife of John Docherty, New Castle; sons, Wayne D., married to Nancy (Hoppel), Johns town, and Jeffrey K., married to Linda (Hudack), LaPorte, Texas; and daughter-in-law, Dorothy J. (Jezeski), Windber. Also nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Brother of Mary Lou Auman, Brunswick, Ohio. Member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, men's choir, adult Sunday school, Tuesday fellowship, Union Local 1288, the Town and Country and retired men's league bowling teams for over 40 years at Zips Bowling Lanes and the Richland Area Seniors. Mr. Rice retired from the U.S. Steel Co. with over 40 years of service as a grievance representative and served with the 3rd Infantry Division in World War II, receiving the Purple Heart having been wounded during the battle of Anzio beach head . He enjoyed playing pinochle and was also a member of the retired men's breakfast. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Geisel Funeral Home, Dale. Funeral service will be held at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Golde and Ash streets, at 10 a.m. Thursday, the Rev. Earl Janssen. Interment and graveside military rite by the VFW 155 Ritual Team at Richland Cemetery. Contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Rice to the Trinity Lutheran Church.
