OBITUARY

Hiram Shaffer was born April 21, 1838 and died June, 8, 1908, aged 70 y - 1 m and 7 d. Bro. Shaffer was a consistent everyday Christian, a loving father, a kind neighbor and loyal citizen. As a Christian he was a man who always put best construction on the happenings of his fellow-men and was always ready to speak a word of comfort.

The day before Thanksgiving Day, last November, he was stricken with paralysis and confined to his home until quite recently he had gained strength and to be able to be present a preaching services only Sabbath mornings before he died and he enjoyed the services to the fullest extent.

Bro. Shaffer was married four times; first, he married Susan Wingard Dec 23, 1857. To this union were born 6 children, 1 boy and 5 girls.

Second, he married Elizabeth Miller, Jan 29, 1865. To this union were born 6 children, 3 boys and 3 girls.

Third, he married Margaret Kaufman, Oct. 23, 1887 and fourth, he married Eliza Varner, Feb 23, 1892. Who, with 3 children remain to mourn his departure. Bro. Shaffer witnessed 12 funerals in his home as but 3 children and a widow remain here sad and heart-broken. The remaining children are Mrs. Lucy Ann Horner, living at Windber, Pa.; Tobias Shaffer living near Salix, Pa.; and Mrs. Nancy Cora, wife of Jas. Andrie, living at Duquesne, Pa.

Bro. Shaffer was a strict citizen, a strong advocate of temperance and moral reform and a consistent member of the U. Ev. Church.

Funeral services by the writer from Prov. 12:28, assisted by D. S. Hafer, of the Lutheran Church and Rev. Shaffer of the Dunkard Church. May they all meet in Heaven.

The cause of her death was Complications during childbirth.

Hiram next married Elizabeth Miller, daughter of Tobias Miller and Nancy Wingard, on 29 Jan 1865.¹⁶⁰³ (Elizabeth Miller was born on 3 Mar 1843 in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, USA,¹⁶¹⁸ died on 9 Dec 1886 in Salix, Cambria, Pennsylvania, USA ¹⁶¹⁸ and was buried in Dunmyer Lutheran Cemetery (Salix, Cambria, Pennsylvania, USA) ¹⁶¹⁸.)

Hiram next married Margaret Wingard, daughter of Jacob Wingard and Maria Lehman, on 23 Oct 1887.
