OBITUARY
July 22nd, near Davidville, Somerset Co., Pa., Bro. JOHN I. KAUFFMAN, aged 50 years, 4 months and 16 days. Bro. Kauffman was a faithful member of the Amish church about 28 years. His death was unexpected, as he had worked in the harvest the 21st, but in the night was taken with pains in the region of the heart from which he suffered until 5 P. M. of the next day. The funeral services were conducted by Moses Miller, Jonas Harshberger and Isaac Miller, from John 5:24-30. He leaves a sorrowing widow and seven children, who have the sympathies of many.

For several terms he served as assessor and collector of the township. During the Civil war he was twice drafted, the first time paying a fine of three hundred dollars and the second time furnishing a substitute. His action in the matter was determined by the objection to the war, which forms part of the tenets of the Amish church, of which he was a member. Politically he was first a Whig and later a Republican. 1573
