75. Rebecca ROSS was born on 22 DEC 1769 in Lancaster, Lancaster Co., PA. She died on 22 JAN 1853 in Bedford Co., PA. She was buried in Quaker Cemetery, East St. Clair Twp., Bedford Co., PA. The Quaker Cemetery is located on Route 56 west of Fishertown in East St. Clair Twp., Bedford Co., PA. Rebecca's grave has a marker erected in 1967 by the Barefoot Reunion Association which says: "Rebecca (Ross) Barefoot, wife of Dr. Benjamin Barefoot (grand-daughter of Col. George Ross, signer of Declaration of Independence), mother of James Barefoot, Pioneer settler of Bedford Co. 12-22-1768 -- 1-22-1853." I have found no records proving or disproving her connection to this family. Her relationship to James and George the Signer has been a part of oral family history for some generations.
Handwritten on the last page of the Rebecca Ross Bible is: "George Ross served in the Revolutionary War as Colonel of Pennsylvania troops, organization not stated. The following regiment orders were signed by him July 1, 1776: 'Lieutenant Crawford is ordered to take the detachment of the 1st Battalion ordered for the borough of Lancaster, under his command, to have the roll called morning and evening, and consult with his committee for maintaining the proper guard and pay proper attending to their requisitions.'" There is no notation saying George Ross was her grandfather. (The Rebecca Ross Bible was once in the possession of Carl and Avis Barefoot. Its present location is unknown. This bible was printed in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1784 and purchased by Rebecca Ross 13 Jan 1785.)
According to the" Portrait and Biographical Record of Lancaster Co., PA," Southwest Pennsylvania Genealogical Services, Laughlintown, PA, 1918, page 692, Leacock Presbyterian Church Cemetery records show a Samuel Barefoot, son of Benjamin and Rebecca, died 7 Mar 1817, aged 1 year and 9 months. If this record is accurate, perhaps this child was named after a brother Samuel who died in 1814. Rebecca would have been aged 45 at the time of this child's birth, certainly not too old to have a baby, but it would have been 17 years since the birth of her last known child, a substantial gap of years. It is important to note this child's name is not recorded in the Rebecca Ross bible.
She was married to Dr. Benjamin BAREFOOT (son of Thomas BAREFOOT and Elizabeth WELLS) on 28 APR 1787 in Lancaster Co., PA. Dr. Benjamin BAREFOOT22 was born in 1764 in Chester Co., PA. I have strong doubts that Benjamin was actually the son of Thomas Barefoot, and am inclined to think instead that he was the son of Samuel, or that his father's name was William. However, since oral family history claims Thomas as his father, that connection is retained until disproven.
Benjamin is listed on the tax duplicate of West Nantmell Twp., Chester Co., PA in 1785. At that time, all males were placed on the tax duplicate when they became 21 years of age. Subtracting 21 from 1785 would make Benjamin's birth year 1764. This is the birth date used on all S.A.R. and D.A.R. records mentioning Benjamin. No records have been located officially noting his date or place of birth. He died in 1839 in PA. Benjamin was killed (by whom or what unknown) in 1839 while on a trip to Bedford Co. to visit his son James. He was buried in Leacock Presbyterian Cemetery, Lancaster Co., PA. There is a Revolutionary marker on his grave. It is not known if or where Dr. Barefoot received his medical education. Until the early 1900s licenses were not required in Pennsylvania. Up to that time all one had to do to become a physician was study under another doctor, read his books and "put up a shingle."
