bullet  General Notes:

Children of Rev. George Ross, by his first wife:

AENEAS ROSS. He was born New Castle, Del., Sept. 17, 1716, and died at the same place between Apr. 9, and 29th, 1782. In 1739 he went to England to take Holy Orders. In 1740 he preached at Bristol (What Bristol?). In June, 1741, he assumed temporary charge of Christ Church, Philadelphia, the then Rector having died. He remained there over a year. From 1742 to 1758 he had charge of the congregations at Oxford (Trinity) and Whitemarsh (St. Thomas’s). He continued, however, to assist Dr. Jenney at Christ Church until July 14, 1743, when he resigned, in order to give his whole time to Trinity and St. Thomas’s. Dr. Anron Cleveland, the Rector at St. Immanuel, New Castle, Del., having died Aug. 11, 1757, Mr. Ross was appointed to the vacancy, and he assumed charge of the mission there May 3, 1758, where he remained until his death, in 1782. He was buried at Immanuel Church, but there is no record to show it. Mr. Ross married Jan. 3, 1745 (Christ Church, Philadelphia), Sarah Leach. Pennsylvania Archives, 2nd Series, Vol. VIII, pg. 221, gives the date of marriage as June 4, 1745, but Mr. E. H. Bell, who has had the original records of Christ Church examined, says Jan. 3, 1745 is the proper date.

Aeneas ROSS was born on 17 SEP 1716 in New Castle, New Castle Co., DE. He was christened on 17 OCT 1716 in Immanuel Church, New Castle, New Castle Co., DE. He died in APR 1782 in New Castle, New Castle Co., DE. Aeneas was ordained an Episcopal clergyman in London in 1739. He served at St. James the Greater Church, Bristol, PA from 1740-41 and Christ Church, Philadelphia, from June 1741 to 14 July 1743. When in 1743 he took charge of Trinity Church, Oxford Twp. Chester Co., PA and St. Thomas’s Church, Whitemarsh, PA, he lived in Germantown, PA. Upon the death of Dr. Anron Cleveland, rector of Immanuel Church, New Castle, DE, 11 Aug 1757, Aeneas was appointed to the vacancy and he assumed charge of the mission there 3 May 1758, remaining until his death in 1782. Thus, Aeneas and his father George served a combined 65 years as rector of Immanuel Church.

bullet  Research Notes:

In "Sketch of Early Ecclesiastical Affairs in New Castle, Delaware, and History of Immanuel Church," it is written that Aeneas..."is said to have been a true patriot and to have preached many patriotic sermons. Unlike most Church of England Missionaries at the time, he was a native of the colony and identified in every way with his people and their interests. His brothers early espoused the cause of independence, one of whom, George Ross, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Immanuel Church was the only Episcopal Church on the Peninsula which was kept open during the whole of the Revolutionary War."
He was married to Sarah LEECH on 3 JAN 1745 in Christ Church, Philadelphia, PA.
Aeneas ROSS and Sarah LEECH had the following children:
26 i. Aeneas ROSS Jr. was born in 1746. He was buried in Trinity Church, Oxford Twp., Chester Co., PA. He died young.
27 ii. Maria ROSS was born in 1748. She was buried in Trinity Church, Oxford Twp., Chester Co., PA. She died young.
28 iii. Sarah ROSS was born in 1750. She was buried in Trinity Church, Oxford Twp., Chester Co., PA. She died young.
+29 iv. John ROSS.
30 v. Mary ROSS was born about SEP 1753 in PA. She was christened on 4 FEB 1754 in Oxford Twp., Philadelphia Co., PA. Mary was aged 5 months at the time of her christening. She died before 1782.
31 vi. Joanna ROSS was born about 1754. She died after 1782. She married first Captain Thomas Holland, 13 Oct 1775 at Immanuel Church, New Castle, DE. He had been an officer in the British Army, then served as Captain in the Delaware Regiment, Continental Line, and died a few days after the Battle of Germantown of wounds received. She then married James Armstrong 29 Jan 1789. Joanna had no children.
