He made a wooden broom for Joyce so that she could help Mom clean. It was whittled from one piece of wood. Joyce still has this broom.

One of the memories that Mom likes to tell on me is when Grandpa was cutting the grass near the house with a scythe. Joyce went running up to him just as he swung the scythe. The tip hit Joyce in the left temple - not much damage but lots of blood. Grandpa chewed tobacco so the first thing he did was to put his "chew" on the wound. When he carried me into the house and Mom saw me she nearly fainted - I was crying and had blood and tobacco juice all over my face. I still have a small scar from this.

From talking to Mom and Dad, he was a quiet, patient, kindhearted man. He loved his two granddaughters and they loved him. Since they were living with him, they followed him everywhere. One of my favorite pictures is of Carol [Carol Ann (DUPPSTADT) ROUDABUSH] and me helping him to feed the chickens.

Mom also tells of how it affected me when he died. In two more months, I would have been three years old. At that time the bodies were viewed at home. I believe I have a recollection of the casket in the corner of the living room. Mom says that when they took the casket from the house I pitched a fit and said they couldn't take my Grandpa away.
