OBITUARY - Charlie Rucker
Missing: A Happy Smile and a Friendly Face

Judge Charley C. Rucker, age 82 passed onto a better life on Friday August 14th at 3:00 p.m. Judge Rucker was at Doctors Hospital in Corpus and had been ill only a short time. We are all saddened by his passing, you see; as he never met a stranger. He would smile, shake your hand and inquire as to your health. Even at 82 he never ceased to serve the people of Freer. Sometimes he might perform 3 weddings a night; and he did not always take money for doing it. He told us one night he had 3 weddings but only 2 showed up, he guessed the other couple had second thoughts.

Judge Rucker was born in Arkansas in 1899. He was the oldest of 9 children, 6 boys and 3 girls. He was raised on a farm. He met Miss Lessie Mai Wright from Louisiana and in 1926 they were married. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1976.

Two daughters were born to them. Sally Taylor who lives in Corpus Christi and Charlene Morneau from McAllen.

Mr. and Mrs. Rucker came west to Freer in 1938 and lived in a bunk house at Seven Sisters. Then he worked for Parr and De Laney. He owned a Conoco station when he decided to run for judge. He served Freer over 20 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church and a dedicated member of Freer Lions Club. He never failed to help out the Salvation Army Drive each year and to offer his help to the needy. The Boy Scouts could not have managed without him as also the Freer Youth Rodeo.

Many friends from Texas and Arkansas have come to bid Charlie "Adieu." His sisters Mamie, Vista, and Clara are here as is his brother Howard Ed. His brother from Houston is not here as he is very ill.

Charlie had 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. His Lessie preceded him in death.

Judge Rucker carried in his pocket a very worn picture of his horse and wagon.

Quoting a man who had known Charlie all his life, "There was no thing Charlie couldn't do."

Services were held at First Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. in Tuesday, August 18th. He will be very much missed.

"Do not weep my friends for me, For I am in heaven." 722
