1 dies, 2 hurt in Crash
Victim ID'd; 46th traffic fatality in 2007

A man was killed Thursday night in a two-vehicle crash on McCormick Road in Horry County.

The vehicles crashed about 9:15 p.m. in front of the Highland Ridge development off McCormick Road, Horry County fire officials reported.

John Steven Pruss, 31, of Cairnbrook, Pa., was killed in the crash, Coroner Robert Edge said. Pruss was living in Surfside Beach, he said.

Pruss is the 46th traffic fatality in Horry County this year.

Two occupants of the other vehicle involved, a woman and her teenage son, were transported to hospitals, said Todd Cartner, spokesman for Horry County Fire Rescue.

The teen was taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, and a medical helicopter flew his mother to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where she was in serious condition late Thursday, Cartner said.

The S.C. HIghway Patrol is investigating the wreck, Cartner said, and it is unclear whether charges will be filed.

The crash happened just south of an S-curve that nearby residents say makes for a dangerous drive. "This is a very bad place," said Justin Boyd, a Highland Ridge resident. Boyd said he was out mowing when he heard the wreck.

"It was a big bang."

He said he's not surprised Thursday night's wreck happened.

"Based on the S-shape curve in the road over there and the fact that it's not lit very well, this can be bad," he said.
